A miniature milling spindle with Active Magnetic Bearings
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper describes the design and realization of a miniature milling spindle with Active Magnetic Bearings (AMBs). Permanent magnet biased, reluctance type actuators position the rotor in five Degrees of Freedom (DOF), leaving the rotation unconstrained. A rotordynamic model was developed to expedite the controller design, and enabled modeling of the spindle’s performance under the influence of cutting forces. A modal controller, including a negative stiffness compensation scheme, was implemented. A cross-feedback controller partly compensates the gyroscopic effect. The spindle with these controllers has a maximum speed of 150.000 rpm. 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Chatter Suppression in a High Speed Magnetic Spindle by Adding Damping
Magnetic bearings are used in several applications, but they didn’t succeed in the machine tool industry, due basically to their low damping, with its associated low chatter free cutting capacity. This work shows the development of a high speed milling spindle supported on magnetic bearings with high chatter resistance. That is achieved by using control strategies which add damping to the beari...
متن کاملH∞ Robust Controller Design and Experimental Analysis of Active Magnetic Bearings with Flexible Rotor System
H∞ controller for active magnetic bearings (AMBs) with flexible rotor system was designed in this paper. The motion equations of AMBs and flexible rotor system are built based on finite element methods (FEM). Weighting function matrices of H∞ controller for AMBs are studied for both the sensitivity and the complementary sensitivity of H∞ control theory. The simulation shows that the H∞ control ...

A new dynamical modeling of Active Magnetic Bearing Spindle (AMBS) to identify machining stability of High Speed Milling (HSM) is presented. This original modeling includes all the minimum required parameters for stability analysis of AMBS machining. The stability diagram generated with this new model is compared to classical stability lobes theory. Thus, behavior’s specificities are highlighte...
متن کاملAnalysis of Lathe Spindle Using Ansys
The machine tool spindle provides the relative motion between the cutting tool and the workpiece which is necessary to perform a material removal operation. In turning, it is the physical link between the machine tool structure and the workpiece, while in processes like milling, drilling or grinding, it links the structure and the cutting tool. This work deals with design and analysis of Lathe ...
متن کاملCompensation of Machine Tool Spindle Error Motions in the Radial Direction for Accurate Monitoring of Cutting Forces Utilizing Sensitive Displacement Sensors
Abstract—This paper deals with the cutting force monitoring for intelligent end milling operations. The authors have employed displacement sensors to monitor the cutting forces, as they are cheap and small enough to be built in the spindle structure. A monitoring method, which utilizes sensitive displacement sensors, is discussed. The sensors are installed in X Y directions near the front beari...
